Introduction

Thanks for your interest in the Chemistry placement exam.  This exam will help determine which general chemistry course(s) are the best fit for you.  All students are encouraged to take this exam.  Depending on your performance on this exam, you will be placed either into CHEM11 or CHEM5/6 - see placement flowchart.

NOTES: If you have taken the AP exam and scored 4 or 5, scored 6 or 7 on the IB, or received an overall grade of A on a GCE A-Level Examination (AS/A2), you have already received Credit on Entrance for CHEM5 and been placed into CHEM11; you do not need to take this exam. This exam does not grant Credit on Entrance for CHEM5. Successful completion of CHEM11 will give you credit for both CHEM5 and CHEM11.

Anyone interested in taking CHEM11 must place into the course, either via one of the qualifications above or via this placement exam. If you are unsure whether you should take CHEM5 or CHEM11, you are encouraged to take the placement exam.  Additionally, placement into CHEM11 via the above qualifications or via the placement exam is binding.
