Biography
Professor Hughes's interests lie in the areas of mechanistic organometallic, inorganic, and organic chemistry. He currently uses computational methods to determine electronic structure, bonding motifs and reaction pathways in compounds related to catalytically important systems. He is the 2010 winner of the ACS Award for Creative Work in Fluorine Chemistry, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the American Chemical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Born in Denbigh, Wales, he received his undergraduate education at UMIST in England, and his Ph.D. at the University of Toronto, Canada, under the guidance of John Powell. After postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Bristol, England (with Michael Green) and McGill University, Montréal, Canada (with John Harrod), he joined the Chemistry Department at Dartmouth College, where he is now a Research Professor and the Frank R. Mori Professor of Chemistry (Emeritus).
